Alkanes are saturated hydrocarbons with the general formula CnH(2n+2).

Explanation:

They consist of only C-C single bonds and C-H bonds. They can be straight chain or branched. They can be formed from reducing alkenes. They can undergo free radical substitution with halogens in the presence of UV light. I would think these are the main things that constitute an alkane :)
