Charge in a battery is built up through movement of ions in a solution. This requires an electrical charge for the ions to be attracted to. A DC current is ideal since is provides a constant charge so the ions are always moving in the same direction as long as the current is applied.

An AC current, however, is not ideal as the charge reverses quickly so the ions will not move in a consistent direction so very little, if any charge is built up.
