It is obvious from the above ray diagram that XY represents the effective size of the mirror required to see one's full image standing in front of the mirror.

Here XY is parallel to and equidustant from both the man and his image as in case of plane mirror the image distance is equal to the object distance. So both the ponts X and Y are at the mid points on the side of the red triangle.Hence the segment XY should be half of the length of the image or the length of the person viewing his full image in the mirror.
