Under conditions in which the density of #CO_2# is 1.96gL and that of #N_2# is 1.25 gL , which gas will effuse more rapidly? What will the ratio of the rates of effusion of #N_2# to #CO_2#?

1 Answer

#N_2# is less dense so will effuse more rapidly.

Graham's Law states:

#Rprop(1)/(sqrtM_r)#

In this case:

#(R_(CO_2))/(R_(N_2))=sqrt((M_r(N_2))/(M_r(CO_2))) = sqrt((28)/(44))=0.8#

Here is a video which shows how to solve a different problem using Graham's law.

Hope this helps!
