Running an electric current through water will split the water into separate gases (hydrogen and oxygen). This process is called electrolysis.

Note that the balanced equation indicates that both gases will exist as diatomic molecules. A single atom of oxygen will not be stable.

2#H_2O# -> 2#H_2# + #O_2#
