The distributive law is used in situations like this

`a(b-c)=ab-ac`

(This is the distributive law of multiplication over subtraction)

`a(b+c)=ab+ac`

(This is the distributive law of multiplication over addition).

`x^2(2y^3 - 98) =x^2 2y^3 - 98x^2`

`3x^2(2y^3 +1) =6x^2 2y^3 +3x^2`
