The number of electrons that can be accomodated in each shell is given by #2n^2# rule where n stands for the number of shell. For example you want to check that how many electrons you can accomodate in the first shell then you will just simply apply the #2n^2# rule like #2(1)^2# that is equal to 2, that means that you cannot accomodate more than 2 electrons in the first shell. For the second shell you will apply the rule again #2(2)^2# which is equal to 8 that means you cannot accomodate more than 8 electrons in the second shell.
