The new pressure of the sample will be #"0.494 atm"#, or half of what the initial pressure was.

The reason this happens is that, according to Boyle's law, pressure and volume have an inverse relationship if temperature is constant.

Mathematically, this is expressed as

#P_1V_1 = P_2V_2#

SInce no mention of temperature is made, I assume taht it is being held constant. This implies that the pressure in the new container will be

#P_2 = V_1/V_2 * P_1 = "1.00 L"/"2.00 L" * "0.988 atm" = "0.494 atm"#

When the volume is doubled, the pressure is halved.
