Between each vertebra in the spinal column, are discs of cartilage. Their job is to cushion the vertebrae. What we call a slipped disc is actually a herniated disk. With a herniated disc, the soft inner part of the disc ruptures through a crack in the more rigid, outer part of the disc. A bulging disc does not involve a rupture of the disc, but it does protrude outside of its normal space.
