The Golgi apparatus function is to collect, modify, package, and distribute proteins and lipids. It is sometimes called the shipping and receiving department of the cell.

It is shaped like a stack of bowls with secretory vesicles on their rims.

Specifically, the Golgi apparatus functions by modifying and packaging proteins and lipids into secretory vesicles: small, spherically shaped sacs that bud from its ends. These vesicles often migrate to and merge with the plasma membrane, releasing their contents outside of the cell.

The Golgi apparatus is present in larger numbers and is most highly developed in cells that secrete protein, such as the cells of the salivary glands or the pancreas.

The Golgi (gol'je) apparatus was named for Camillo Golgi (1843–1926), an Italian histologist).

In higher plants, vesicles from the Golgi apparatus are involved in forming the cell plate during cytokinesis, along which the new cell walls will be manufactured. Also, in plant cells, as much as 80% of biochemical activity in the Golgi apparatus can be devoted to producing chemicals such as pectin and polysaccharides used in making cell walls.

The Golgi complex is referred to as the manufacturing and the shipping center of the eukaryoric cell. The Golgi apparatus or the Golgi body or Golgi complex or Golgi is a cellular organelle present in most of the cells of the eukaryotic organisms. The Golgi bodies were identified by an Italian biologist Camillo Golgi in the year 1897 and was maned after him in the year 1898. The Golgi complex is responsible inside the cell for packaging of the protein molecules before they are sent to their destination. This organelles helps in processing and packaging the macromolecules like proteins and lipids that are synthesized by the cell, It is known as the 'post office' of the cell. The major function of the Golgi body is to modify , sort and package the macromolecules. It also helps in transportation of lipids around the cell and the creation of lysosomes.
