The answer is $18+$2.16=$20.16

Remember: 12%-=12/100

You should calculate 12% of 18 and add it up to 18 to find the new salary.

To calculate 12% of 18:

If you earn $100 you would receive $12 pay increase. But you earn $18 so we don't know the increase (lets call it k)

Since 12% is always 12%:

12/100=k/18

k = 18*(12/100) = (18*12)/100 = 216/100=2.16
