A synthesis reaction (combination reaction) occurs when two or more reactants combine to produce a single product. The generic reaction is #"A+B"##rarr##"C"# .

The following are examples of synthesis reactions.

Hydrogen gas plus oxygen gas produce water.

#"H"_2("g")+"O"_2("g")##rarr##"H"_2"O(g)"#

Sodium metal plus chlorine gas produce sodium chloride.

#"Na(s)"+"Cl"_2("g")"##rarr##"NaCl(s)"#

Synthesis reactions can also occur between compounds.

Calcium oxide plus carbon dioxide produce calcium carbonate.

#"CaO(s)"+"CO"_2("g")##rarr##"CaCO"_3("s")#
