The amnion is a membrane that surrounds an embryo during the period of gestation. During development it fills with amniotic fluid, which cushions the fetus and allows the fetus to move. The amnion filled with amniotic fluid is called the amniotic sac. On the basis of presence of an amnion, organisms can be classified as Amniotes or Anamniotes.
