Nitrogen fixation is a process in which atmospheric nitrogen #N_2# is converted into #NH_4^+# or #NO_2#.

Explanation:

There are different organisms ,which help in this process, like bacteria examples include Rhizobia , Frankia. Normally, when a plant dies, the Nitrogen in the plant gets released into the environment in various forms which can be used by other plants.

the following figure will explain the nitrogen fixation better

fixationcan be defined as a process by which anything which is converted from its inert form (unusable form) to another form which is more readily available for a use by living organisms.
