One way to save time when writing formulas is to save common formulas in a Scratchpad.
Explanation:
On Scratchpads, you can write whatever you like and access them at any point. I've heard of some contributors using this strategy to save common formattign techniques so as not to write and re-write them constantly.
In addition to scratchpads, I do a lot of copying and pasting.

Here's a recent example: http://socratic.org/questions/how-do-you-long-divide-x-2-4x-4-x-2-1
I built up to:
by copying and pasting, making changes and additions where needed. In fact this is an answer I made using an old answer saved to a scratchpad. (I replaced the old answer on my scratchpad, then copied the whole thing and pasted it into the public answer.)
If you click "Edit answer"to see the unformatted text, you'll see why I did not want to re-type this!
Less tedious, but still easier for me with copy and paste, was this recent answer:

Sometimes I copy whole lines, other times just expressions that were tedious to type or format.
Found a cool way of writing long division format!
Explanation:
I wanted to find a better format to use for longdivision answers and I think I found a very cool-looking one.

This is probalby the best combination of symbols and syntax I could come up with, but if you ask me, I say it looks great! :D
