This is because iron is lost during a woman's period.

During a woman's menstrual cycle the walls of the uterus build up before an egg is release. If this egg is not fertilized, then there is no need for the protective uterus lining - so both the lining and egg are shed. This results in bleeding.

Our blood contains a large proportion of the iron in our bodies. Because women lose blood during a period, they also lose iron. This means that they need more iron in their diet to counteract this.
