Explanation:

The carbon is member from the 14th family in the periodic table. It also has 6 electrons(atomic number = 6). When we distribute those electrons, we create #1s²2s²2p²# but the carbon is hybridized, making it # 1s²2s¹2p³# - second orbital hybrid - s¹p³ or sp³
We can consider this hybrid orbital like this:
|@@|-------|@@|----------|@~|@~ |~~| -> Normal valency (s²p²).
|@@|-------|@~ |----------|@~|@~|@~| -> Hybrid valency (sp³).
Couldn't make other way to express the electrons without bugs, so, @= electron and ~ = empty space.
