R is the distance between the two. - When charges move or current flows in a conductor (read your non-magnetic object) it produces magnetic field.
The direction of the lines of force of this magnetic field are given by Maxwell's right hand thumb rule . This magnetic field thus produced will interact and exert force on the magnetic field of the magnet.
