What we see as the "surface" of the sun is the photosphere .

Explanation:

While the "surface" of the sun looks substantial enough, it is actually a near vacuum, at about #1/6000# the density of our atmosphere at sea level. But it is like a glowing fog, so at a distance, it looks solid, the same way a cloud looks solid from a distance.
