I will name a few that can improve it. 1st is to exercise regularly like 3-4 times a week, 2nd is to avoid polluted areas, 3rd is to practice deep breathing exercises, 4th is avoid smoking or inhaling second smoke.

Explanation:

When I say exercise, it can be weight lifting, swimming, jogging or stationary biking. Don't over exert yourself if you are not yet used to regular exercise, listen to your body. It is much better if you could consult a physical trainer who could set the pace for your age and lifestyle.

For avoiding polluted areas, it is impossible if you are living in a highly populated city filled with cars and factories. Even if you wear face masks, it cannot completely filter all the pollution. Try to go to a forest area where there is no pollution to give your lungs a rest at least once a month or depending on your availability.

In practicing deep breathing exercises, try to do yoga, meditation or tai chi. If you do not like any of those, just sit properly and inhale for 5 seconds ,exhale for 4 seconds and repeat as many times as you can during your available time so that your lungs will be conditioned to inhale and exhale properly and will actually help reduce your anxieties.

I cannot be a hypocrite when it comes to smoking so what I can tell you is that do not consume 1 pack or more everyday so you won't get cancer or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. Try to reduce it to 1 stick per day until 1 stick per week. Don't quit immediately without support because you will relapse in a matter of days. If you do not smoke, then good but if you have people around you that do, try to explain to them that 2nd hand smoke is uncomfortable for you or just try to stay away when they smoke.

Please do not ever try to imitate the US Navy SEAL BUD/S training where they simulate drowning to improve lung capacity and breath holding. This is highly dangerous and will definitely kill you.
