As radiation attacks the cells of living matter it will damage them. Radiation poisoning will disallow them to reproduce normally, or cause them reproduce at an increased rate. This is what also what comprises cancer.

In studies it has been shown that animals are more susceptible to radiation poisoning than plants and single cell organisms.
