The anti-slavery (usually people from the north as southern citizens relied on slaves for the farms and plantations that made up the south) members of both the Whig party and the Democratic party then joined to form The Republican party. Their first election was lost to James Buchanan (Democrat), but when the former Whig senator and Republican supporter Abraham Lincoln joined the party, America got its first Republican President (this was the election in 1860.
