How do I insert blank spaces in a line - so as to be able to make a comment at the side of the page about what has been done in a calculation?

I can think of two ways off the top of my head.

The first is to use white text to put in space. For example, the line

#3x+2=5color(white)(XXXXXX)# Subtract #2# from both sides.

Without the hashtags, this is 3x+2=5color(white)(XXXXXX). The X's, in white, create the space between the math and the line of text.

Another method which does the same thing in a slightly different way would be to fill the space with spaces, still within the hashtags.

The line

#3x+2=5" "" "" "" "" "# Subtract #2# from both sides.

Is created, without the hashtags, by 3x+2=5" "" "" "" "" ". Here, each " " is one space that creates a little white space.
