Amnesia refers to the inability to access or create memories.
Retrograde amnesia is the loss of memories, such as what happens when someone is in a car crash but they can't remember how the crash happened. More severe cases can cause someone to not remember much more, even to the extent of now knowing their own name.
Anterograde amnesia is the inability to create new memories. A typical example is an older person who keeps asking repeatedly the same question - they are unable to remember what the answer was the first time.
