Coal is fossilised plants: mostly formed during Carboniferous period (about 350 to 300 million years ago).
Explanation:
Earth had dense forests of tree ferns during Carboniferous and there was vast wetland all around. Climate was tropical and humid.
Inundation of forests by sea water was common. Trees did not decay under pressure and heat, when got suddenly buried in swaps.
Plants eventually became fossilised by a process called carbonisation and coal deposits were formed.
