Microscopic study of urine sample is important as it may reveal renal disease or infection.

Explanation:

Urine is centrifuged and the sediment is used for microscopic analysis. Normally, urine of healthy persons reveal only few epithelial cells from kidney, ureter, bladder and urethra.

Presence of many RBCs may mean there is:
Glomerular disease
Trauma in urinary system
or Necrosis.

Presence of many WBCs indicates infection in urinary system.

Microscopic examination of sediment may reveal casts : which are formed of albuminous material. These are present in urine only when there is some kidney disorder.

Infecting bacteria are also seen and identified in urine sediment examination by microscope.
