Fusion involves coming together, fission means division. In biology, binary fission is naturally seen in asexual reproduction.

Explanation:

  • Protoplasmic fusion could be achieved in laboratory by using PEG (polyethylene glycol). It is used in biotechnology, or for production of monoclonal antibodies, or in somatic hybridisation.

  • Natural fusion of cells takes place during fertilisation of male and female gametes. It is different from double fertilisation of angisrerms (flowering plants) where ther is triple fusion.
  • Binary fission on the other hand is very common mode of reproduction in simpler forms of life. Fission is also seen in Hydra and Planaria .
