Brain stem is the posterior part of the brain , adjoining and structurally continuous with the spinal cord.
Diseases of the brain stem can result in abnormalities in the function of cranial nerves that may lead to --
- vertigo
- problems in swallowing
- visual disturbances
- pupil abnormalities
- changes in sensations
- muscle weakness
- hearing problems
- speech difficulties
- voice change
- co ordination problems
Brain stem plays a role in conduction. All infomrmation relayed from the body to the cerebrum and cerebellum and vice versa must traverse the brain stem.
Brain stem damage is very serious and often life threatening.
