When air enters the nasal passages it is either warmed or cooled (depending on the ambient air temperature outside), filtered, and moistened.

Explanation:

After inhalation, the large nasal passages cause moderation of the air temperature to near body temperature.

The vibrissae (short hairs) filter the dust and other particulate matter while the mucosa moistens the inhaled air.

Most of the trapped dust and particulate matter is moved by cilia to the pharynx where it is goes through the oesophagus into the stomach and is digested.
