You multiple out the equation and then simplify keeping the equation balanced:

#-2(4x - 5) + 6(2x + 1) = 8#

#-8x + 10 + 12x + 6 = 8#

#4x + 16 = 8#

#4x + 16 - 16 = 8 - 16#

#4x = -8#

#(4x)/4 = -8/4#

#x = -2#
