The ecological niche is the structural and functional importance of a species in its habitats.

Explanation:

  1. Joseph Grinnel (1917) coined the term. He visualised 'niche' as the address of the organism. This was not sufficient to study the functional aspects of the organisms.

2.Charle Elton (1927) defined the functional roles and related with the energy relationship. This niche is thus related to the trophic concept.
