#y = 6/x# will give a hyperbola. It is not linear.

Explanation:

Linear means to do with a straight line.

The equation of a straight line must have at least 2 of the following terms:

an x-term, a y-term and a constant (or number) term.

The x and y may not be in the denominator.

In #y =6/x#, when you cross-multiply you will end up with

#xy=6# which has an #xy#-term.

#y= 6/x# is the equation for a hyperbola which is a curve, not a line.
