If you mean the spirit of Christmas Past it shows him how he was in younger life and why setbacks in his life embittered him and led to him taking the wrong decisions and the impact of these decisions on himself and others. However the first ghost or spirit was Marley's which warned him what was going to happen and what would consequently happen if he did not take heed of the visits.
