Why is it more important for the restriction enzymes to recognise palindromic seqeunces?

Despite being an endonuclease i.e. nucleic acid digesting enzyme, restriction endonuclease do not randomly destroy a DNA molecule. The enzymes cut only at palindromic sequences to form smaller fragments of DNA.
