Despite being an endonuclease i.e. nucleic acid digesting enzyme, restriction endonuclease do not randomly destroy a DNA molecule. The enzymes cut only at palindromic sequences to form smaller fragments of DNA.

Explanation:

Restriction enzymes are used to cut circular DNA molecule of prokaryotic origin. This type of endonuclease often produce sticky ends which help in creation of recombinant DNA i.e. an alien DNA fragment (containing a desired gene) can be inserted in the cut.
