Why is newtonian mechanics so called ?
1 Answer
After Sir Isaac Newton, upon whose three laws of motion classical mechanics is based.
Explanation:
Isaac Newton formulated three laws of motion:
First law
In an inertial frame of reference, any body will remain at rest or continue at constant velocity unless acted upon by a net force.
Second law
In an inertial frame of reference, the sum of vector forces on an object is proportional to the mass of the object and its acceleration:
Third law
When one body exerts a force on a second body, it experiences an equal force in the opposite direction.
Some of these ideas may have pre-dated Isaac Newton, but he put them together and produced a coherent theory of motion which is the basis of classical mechanics.
Hence classical mechanics is often referred to as Newtonian mechanics.
