The resting heart rate is calculated by counting the number of heart beats per minute of a person who is at rest. To obtain an accurate number, heart rate should be calculated and recorded repeatedly and then averaged. It is important that the conditions under which the heart rate is measured remain the same.
You can manually determine your heart rate by gently pressing your fingers to certain areas of your body, such as on the carotid artery of your neck (see image below), while watching the clock and observing the time.
Generally, you count the number of beats you feel for sixty seconds. If this is too long to wait, you can count the number of beats you feel for thirty seconds and multiple by two or the number of beats you feel for 10 seconds and multiple by six.
You can also calculate heart rate continuously throughout many activities using a heart rate monitor like the one in the image below.
