Reactants are the materials you start with. These are written to the left of the arrow in an equation. Products are what is formed by the process, and are written to the right of the arrow.

Here is an example, in which methane gas, #CH_4# (a common component of natural gas) burns in oxygen gas to form carbon dioxide and water

#CH_4+2O_2 rarr CO_2 + 2H_2O#

The reactants are the methane and oxygen; the products are carbon dioxide (#CO_2#) and water.
