Does the contraction of the diaphragm result in a decrease in the volume of the thoracic cavity or an increase in the volume of the thoracic cavity, or neither of these?

Contraction of diaphragm makes it flatten. This increases the length of the thoracic cavity, hence volume of thoracic cavity increases. Contraction of diaphragm helps us to breathe in.
