A virus that has adapted and emerged as a new diseases causing pathogenic strain is called as an emergent virus.

Explanation:

An emergent virus facilitates pathogenicity in a field that may not normally be associated with it. Often, the increased incidence of diseases caused by such viruses are a result of influence from both man and nature.

An important factor in the developement of an emergent disease is the ability to pass from animal hosts to humans. This adaptation in the viral strain occurs due to selection pressure, for an animal version of the strain of diseases to mutate.

SARS virus and Avian flu are examples of emergent viruses.
