let side of larger square be a and smaller square be b
4a - 4b = 12
so a - b = 3
(a+b)(a-b) = 39
dividing the 2 equations we get a+b = 13
now adding a+b and a-b, we get 2a = 16
a=8 and b=5
the perimeters are 4a=32cm and 4b = 20cm
