Blanche Bruce was the first African American to serve a full term in the United States Senate.

Explanation:

Blanche Bruce was elected on the Republican ticket in Mississippi to the United States Senate. Immediately after the reconstruction African Americans obtained significant political power. This power was reflected in the election of Blanch Bruce to the Senate.

Sadly the Democratic party in the south soon instituted laws to prevent African Americans and freed slaves from voting. Blanche Bruce would not soon be followed in the Senate by other African Americans.
