What causes hiccups?

Hiccups is involuntary reflex contraction of diaphragm.

Explanation:

Diaphragm is having a nerve supply. While eating fast, or any irritating food is in mouth cavity, involuntarily stimulates diaphragm to contract. When diaphragm contracts it is followed by quick contraction of vocal sac. This results in making ^hick^ sound.
Generally hiccup stops after a while.

If it is continuous, causes pains in diaphragm try with a lump of sugar in mouth.

If it continues, visit a doctor.
