Explanation:

Copper is actually reactive element. It can react fast with oxygen and #H_2S#. The green layer you find on the copper vessels and utensils is actually #CuO#, #Cu(NO_3)_2# or some other product of Cu.

Most stable metals are stable because on exposure to air they form a stable non-porous oxide layer on the surface of the metal. This limits the exposure of oxygen to the metal.
