What do we mean by a 'chain reaction' when describing nuclear fission reactions?

The nuclei of heavy elements can be destabilised when struck by a neutron of the right energy, and then split to yield two smaller nuclei and a large amount of energy. They also release more neutrons, which can trigger more fission reactions, leading to a 'chain reaction'.
