This is the lithium salt of sulfurous acid, #H_2SO_3#.......

#"Sulfurous acid"# can also be considered to be #"aquated sulfur dioxide"# in aqueous solution, i.e. #O_2S*H_2O#. Sometimes you use this to sterilize brewing equipment. I do not find its distinct smell to be unpleasant.
