#0.2a + 9 = 11.4# => subtract 9 from both sides:
#0.2a = 2.4# => divide both sides by 0.2:
#a = 2.4/(2/10) = 24/2 = 12#

A sort of cheat method. Not really!

#a=12#

Don't like decimals so lets get rid of them.

Multiply everything by 10 giving:

#2a+90=114#

Subtract 90 from both sides

#2a=24#

Divide both sides by 2

#a=12#
