How do you solve #5x - 3y = 14# for #y#?

To isolate #y#, you have to move the #5x# and the #-3# to the right side. This can be done in this order:
Subtract both sides by #5x# getting

#-3y=14-5x#

Now just divide both sides by -3 to isolate the y:

#y=-(14-5x)/3#
