How does the skeletal system change as we grow?

Here's explanation.

Explanation:

The exact number of bones in a perfect human body is 206.In childhood the number of bones is greater than it so child's body is very much flexible. But as we grow up the bones become connected to each other and forms a perfect human skeleton.

  • Bones decrease in number as a child grows into an adult. This is because of fusion of bony elements, e.g. in the vertebral column.
  • Elongation of long bones continues as long as epiphyseal plates are present. These are ossified in adult life: only an epiphyseal line remains between the epiphysis and diaphysis of long bones.

Collar bones/ clavicles are the last to stop growing, at about 25 years of age.

  • Bone density increases throughout adolescence and it is maximum in young adults, but bone density diminishes rapidly in women after menopause.
  • Joints of skeletal system undergo wear and tear as we grow old and may show changes. Joints also become dry and stiff with age.
  • Rate of repair of bony tissue also slows down with age.
