How do you know which solvent to use? How else but by experiment?

AS a tip, for MOST organic substances, the best solvent to use is ethyl alcohol. Most organic solutes have some solubility in HOT ethanol, and as the solution cools, the solutes crystallize out... Ethyl alcohol has a good temperature range and can be placed in a sparkless freezer, is cheap, and as a bonus it smells nice...
