Humans and gorillas are closely related - we're so closely related, that we are in the same family, Hominidae.
Explanation:
Because we share 98% of our DNA with gorillas, this indicates that we are related to them. The fact that so much DNA is shared, indicates a stronger relationship.
For example, same family - Hominidae.
This results in a common ancestor between gorillas and humans before we both started to evolve from the other species.
If we were to compare our DNA with another animal, and the DNA shared is significantly less than with gorillas, we can assume that humans evolved a far longer time ago than the common ancestor with a gorilla.
